π Escape Velocity Calculator
How fast must something go to leave a planet forever, never to fall back?
Results
- Escape velocity
- 11.186 km/s
- Earth check: 11.19 km/s
How it works
v = β(2GM / R)
Escape velocity is the speed where kinetic energy exactly balances gravitational potential energy. Go slower and you fall back or enter orbit; go faster and you leave for good (ignoring air resistance).
Assumptions: Spherical planet, no atmosphere, no rotation assist.
