How it works
1 AU = 149,597,870.7 km · 1 ly ≈ 9.4607×10¹² km · 1 pc = 3.26156 ly
Astronomers switch units by scale: AU inside the Solar System, light-years to nearby stars, parsecs across the galaxy (a parsec comes from parallax: 1 arcsecond of parallax = 1 parsec).
Assumptions: Uses IAU exact AU and standard light-year.
